In Ancient Egypt the scarab, or dung beetle, rolls dung into a ball as food and as a brood chamber in which to lay eggs. The larvae hatch and are immediately surrounded in protection and by what is also their nourishment.  For these reasons the scarab represented a heavenly all sustaining environment, the cycle of birth and regeneration,  and is considered a symbol of protection.
